Pimm’s O’Clock

Wimbledon starts tomorrow, and that means it’s time to break out the Pimm’s!  Pimm’s used to make six different varieties, but most of them have sadly been phased out.  The only ones left in production, as far as I know, are Pimm’s No. 1, gin-based and the most famous of the lot, and the seasonal Pimm’s Winter Cup, which used to be No. 3 and is brandy-based.  Wikipedia claims that No. 6, the vodka-based Pimm’s, is still made in small batches, but I’ve never seen it.  Nos. 2, 4, and 5 were, respectively, Scotch-, rum-, and rye-based, and it would be awesome if some day the company would bring them all back for at least a limited run.  But in the meantime, we can still make and enjoy the traditional cocktail of Wimbledon:

PIMM’S CUP

· 1 1/2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1
· 3 oz. fresh lemonade (to be “authentic” use lemon-lime soda instead)
· Club soda or sweet soda

Combine all ingredients in a highball glass and garnish with an English cucumber spear and an apple slice. If you’re making this in a pitcher, chuck in whatever fresh berries or citrus fruits you have on hand to add to the flavour.

It turns out, however, that the official Pimm’s website has a whole series of other cocktail recipes using Pimm’s No. 1, none of which I’ve ever tried but all of which seem like they might be worth making soon:

PIMM’S PIMPOM

· 1 1/2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1
· 4 1/2 oz. Pomegranate juice

Serve over ice in a highball glass and garnish with an orange slice and ripped basil.

PIMM’S ROYALE

· 1 oz. Pimm’s No. 1
· Cava or Champagne

Pour the Pimm’s into a champagne flute and add a strawberry. Fill with the Cava and serve.

PIMM’S DEUCE

· 1 1/2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1
· Orange juice
· Cranberry juice

Pour the Pimm’s over ice in a highball glass. Fill with equal parts orange and cranberry juice. Garnish with a strawberry and an orange slice.

PIMM’S GINGER

· 1 1/2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1
· Ginger ale

Pour the Pimm’s over ice in a highball glass and fill with ginger ale. Garnish with a spring of mint and a slice of lemon.

PIMM’S WINTER

· 1 1/2 oz. Pimm’s Winter
· Apple juice, warm

Pour the Pimm’s into a mug and fill with the warmed apple juice. Garnish with slices of apple and orange.

Doctor Who Cocktails

This upcoming weekend marks the first part of the finale of the current series of Doctor Who (in the UK, anyway; Americans have to wait a bit longer).  In honor of Matt Smith and his Doctor, whom I rather adore, I thought I’d put together a post of all the Doctor-themed drinks I’ve come across.  (And has anyone come up with a new Sonic Screwdriver cocktail for Eleven’s updated version?)

SONIC SCREWDRIVER

· 1 1/2 oz Vanilla vodka
· 1 1/2 oz Blue Curacao
· 6 oz Clear lemon-lime soda

Half-fill a clear 12 oz. glass with ice. Pour the vodka and blue Curacao over the ice and top with the soda. Stir lightly, and Enjoy!

LASER SCREWDRIVER #1

· 1 oz Triple Sec
· 1 oz Vodka, lemon
· 2 oz Orange Soda

Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into a martini glass.

LASER SCREWDRIVER #2

· 2 1/2 oz Sobe Orange energy drink
· 1 oz Stolichnaya Orange Vodka
· 1 oz 99 Oranges
· 1/2 oz After Shock cinnamon liqueur

SEX IN THE TARDIS

· Vodka
· Kahlua
· Bailey’s Irish mint chocolate cream
· Godiva Chocolate liqueur
· Milk (soy or regular)
· Chocolate syrup
· 3 ice cubes
· 1 banana

Mix the ingredients to taste and blend.

And finally, because the Doctor once claimed he’d invented it:

BANANA DAIQUARI

· 1 oz Light rum
· 1 oz Amber rum
· 3/4 oz Fresh lime juice
· 2 oz Simple syrup
· 1/2 oz Banana liqueur
· 1/2 small banana

Blend the ingredients, reserving 1 slice of banana, with crushed ice and serve in a large goblet. Garnish with the remaining slice of banana.

The Belmont Stakes

Tomorrow is the last of the Triple Crown races this year, and while I’m not much of a horseracing fan I am a big fan of racing-inspired cocktails.  While it may not be as famous a collaboration as the Kentucky Derby/Mint Julep, the Belmont Stakes actually has an official Dale DeGroff-created cocktail that debuted in 1998.  Before that, they had a different official cocktail called the White Carnation, which I believe was meant to match the race’s official flower and trophy. Dale’s cocktail sounds much better to me, but I believe I am honor-bound to attempt both tomorrow even if I never actually watch the race itself! Or maybe especially then.

BELMONT BREEZE

· 1 1/2 oz. Makers Mark Bourbon
· 1/2 oz. Dry Sack Sherry
· 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
· 1/2 oz. simple syrup
· Splash fresh orange juice
· Splash cranberry juice
· 5 mint leaves
· 1 mint sprig
· 1 orange zest

Assemble the first six ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with orange peel and mint sprig.

THE WHITE CARNATION

· 2 oz. Vodka
· 1/2 oz. Peach Schnapps
· 2 oz. Orange Juice
· Soda
· Cream

Stir liquors and soda together and pour over ice in a highball glass. Splash cream over top then garnish with an orange slice.

Finally, I’m not sure this one has anything to do with the race, but if you want a third option here is another cocktail that technically has “Belmont” in its name:

155 BELMONT

· 1 shot Dark rum
· 2 shots Light rum
· 1 shot Vodka
· 1 shot Orange juice

Blend with ice. Serve in a wine glass. Garnish with carrot.
