In honor of Rachel Maddow being back from Afghanistan and going on Meet The Press today, another Rachel/booze post!

Rachel appears to have two favorite cocktails, though she may just throw the term around every time she has a new favorite. Still, this is a good one, as well as being a video tutorial that harkens back to the glory days of radio-style Rachel Maddow. The recipe is as follows:

JACK ROSE

· 2 oz Applejack
· 1/2 oz Grenadine
· 1 Lime, juiced

Shake the ingredients and strain into a martini glass.

The other cocktail Rachel has called her favorite is the Sidecar, though unfortunately the original post in which she made the claim is lost to the annals of time due to the collapse of Air America.

SIDECAR

· 8 parts Brandy (get something nice. Pay at least $16 or you’ll be disappointed)
· 1 part Cointreau
· 2 parts Lemon Juice (do yourself the favor of using fresh-squeezed)

Get a shaker. Put the liquid ingredients in a shaker. Then make your tray of glasses, martini glasses if you’ve got them. Sugar the rim by rubbing the rim of your glasses with the squeezed out lemon, and then dip the rims in a saucer of sugar. When you’re ready put ice the shaker, shake it up, and then strain the drink into your prepared glasses.

THE MADDOW

This cocktail was created by Thad Vogler of San Francisco in honor of Dr. Maddow when she appeared as part of a Mother Jones fundraiser in 2009. The original link below includes video of her appearance in addition to the somewhat (obviously appropriately) San Francisco-specific recipe.

· 2 oz Tanqueray 10 gin
· 1/4 oz Grenadine by Small Hands Foods (San Francisco)
· 1/2 oz Dolin Blanc vermouth
· 2 dashes Orange bitters

Stir well and strain into a 5 oz cocktail glass. Garnish with broad lemon zest.

Employees Only

To go along with the release of their own line of fresh mixers meant to improve the home cocktail experience, Employees Only bartenders have partnered with Daily Candy to share a few of their mixology secrets. Included in the collection of video recipes is a variation on the Tom Collins, the perfect Gin Gimlet, and a Tequila Daisy. The recipes, which I’m looking forward to trying myself as soon as I get my hands on bottles of EO Brand Grenadine and Lime Cordial, are as follows:

TOM COLLINS VARIATION

· 1 3/4 oz Gin
· 1 oz Lemon juice
· 1/2 oz Simple syrup
· 1/2 oz EO Brand Grenadine

Fill a tall glass with ice and partially fill with club soda. Shake the above ingredients with ice and strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with a cherry and lemon wheel.

THE PERFECT GIN GIMLET

· 2 1/2 oz Gin
· 1 oz EO Brand Lime Cordial

Shake the ingredients thoroughly with ice. Strain over ice in a rocks glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

TEQUILA DAISY

· 2 oz Tequila
· 1 oz EO Brand Lime Cordial
· 1/2 oz Grenadine

Shake ingredients with ice and serve on the rocks with a lime wheel garnish.
